It wasn’t a debacle for me. For young people to have an affirmation that they are cool in some way seems positive enough to me. If you and I were at the mall and you pointed the sweatshirt out to me I would not understand what needed to be pointed out, and would probably ask you what you think cool is or is not. When I read the question what I noticed first about it was the misuse of the word belief…yet again in another question. The rest was cool with me. It was pretty good advertising for H&M too. I’m certainly aware of them for the first time. You’ve got to admire an advertisement department that uses edgy controversy to get the company name in the limelight. All the indignant people contributing to the controversy are working for them, looks like to me.
So to the question, who was intentional and who was unaware, and to what degree, is dependent on who you are looking at in this. Advertising, models, other departments in the company, the general public, customers, potential customers. The only thing I can say direct to the question is what I don’t think, which is that it was a debacle. In the UK it is quite common to call kids ‘little monkeys’. This seems to be something that is shared between most families I’ve met. In this regard, the brand was tapping into that culture, and was treating the black child like it would any other child, as a ‘little monkey’. Indeed, when I first saw it, my thoughts were not of racism but of my uncle calling my cousins and me ‘little monkeys’ when we were younger. I can see that it could be construed as racist in a culture that doesn’t be have the practice of calling it’s littlies ‘monkeys’, but then it was not made for those markets. By making this a big issue, I don’t think it has helped eliminate racism. I think it’s just put up another’s barrier to treating children as children.
You see, when it is not a single belief that the controversy was all intentional or all unaware, one can think that there were various degrees of intent and various degrees of unawareness by all parties involved. What did I think about the “coolest monkey in the jungle” message? No big deal. There might have been less reaction if the model had been another phenotype of person. A black phenotype person or mixed phenotype partially black person might be offended if they were still sensitive about historical treatment as lesser people because of other phenotypes that tried to portray their phenotype as superior because of their melanin synthesizing limitation. That’s probably why the company chose a black or partially black model to say it wasn’t about that. A fundamentalist might be offended at the “monkey” reference too, in light of the evolution/creation controversy.
