The publication took more than a year to create. The research portion was extensive, as Boucht, Fedorova, and Gorkova delved into historical archives for both visual and writing inspiration. The trio headed to Bishopsgate Institute and the library at Central Saint Martins to research LGTBQ+ history, politics, and culture in the United Kingdom. Literature such as On Our Backs: Entertainment for the Adventurous Lesbian and old ads and posters fueled their creativity. The search for yesteryear media exemplifies HÄN’s mode of storytelling, which works to mesh the influence of past archives with modern life. “[HÄN] is a mix of old and new gathered research from the team, a collaborative approach to creating a visual and graphic language together,” says Boucht.
The ethos of HÄN, even down to why it is printed, is multifaceted. “A physical tangible publication seems like something very durable, very focused—it captures and preserves the time, the place, the faces, the conversation of the current time,” says Fedorova. In addition, it will exist online as a way for infinite people to access the community and eventually help curate it. Ultimately, the trio hopes the zine will be more than a publication to those represented in its pages. It’s proof that an archive doesn’t have to be physical and can also be envisioned as something intangible, like a memory. “When you create a space, people turn out and bring their beautiful selves and beautiful visions. One of the main missions is to connect queer people from different generations,” says Fedorova. “Archives are not necessarily rooms filled with books. It could be anything. It could be love notes, self-portraits or getting dressed in the morning or kissing someone in a gay bar—it’s all part of our defiant existence.”
