The trio behind La Ligne echo Hudson’s amazement. For their collection, they focused on pieces that made for great layering and could be true workhorses in a person’s wardrobe. There’s a fabulous trench coat, luxuriously soft sweaters and cardigans, and a striped pajama set that, amazingly, wouldn’t raise eyebrows if you decided to wear it to the office or a dinner party. As Molly Howard, who runs the brand along with Meredith Melling and Valerie Macaulay, says, “We really wanted to make these core elevated basics that become staples in people’s wardrobes that can really take you from day to night and be for all occasions and be these pieces that you go back to season after season. Part of achieving this included a near-obsessive focus on the smallest details. Melling shows off a shirt, beaming a prideful smile, and says, “it’s fully piped. We always say we make clothes to eat, sleep, dance, and work in.”
Hudson says he was surprised by the level of craftsmanship and exactness Target was able to provide. He shows off a fuzzy white coat with houndstooth-esque black lines and calls it one of his favorite pieces from the collection. “I told everybody I didn’t think they would be able to make a coat that felt that good.” Then he turns his attention to a set of gloves—which come in brown, black, and purple. Their production also stunned him. “I was like ‘Oh, can we do a leather glove?’ I didn’t think they [Target] would be able to bring it back to me. But they did and I love it so much.”
Kika Vargas’s approach to design might be a little more look-at-me than La Ligne’s, with colorful hand-drawn prints featured on the standout dresses from the collection (there’s also a great purse that resembles a winter puffer jacket). But she also believes the clothes in her collection are perfect for a grand event or a coffee run. “I want them to wear it throughout the day,” she says. For Vargas, who is primarily based in Colombia, working with Target meant the chance to lean into greater size inclusivity. “We don’t necessarily get to work that often with the bigger sizes,” she says, “so it was really nice to be able to focus on inclusivity, to go from an XX-small up to a 4X.”
