The 18th hole is a downhill par 5 listed on the card at 572 yards. If memory serves, it was playing about 560 yards on that day. In any event, conditions that day were perfect for a long drive — hot and humid weather, a downhill hole playing downwind, and firm course conditions. I ripped a drive down the right half of the fairway. We saw it bounce hard once and then disappear over a small ridge. I was consistently hitting my tee shots about 15–20 yards longer than my playing partners that day, so as they got up to their balls I was scanning the fairway ahead of them, searching for my ball. Nothing. Where is it? Did it kick into the rough? We keep heading down the fairway, checking the rough, and still nothing. I’m getting frustrated, as I know I hit a solid shot and should be in good position to finish with a birdie.
But DON’T try and hit up on the ball with your hands. Let the setup create that club path. Trying to do it with your hands will result in scooping, flipping, casting and a big loss of clubhead speed and ultimately a loss of distance and accuracy. Frank Thomas, who used to be the Tech Director for the USGA, surveyed golfers about their driving distance. The average was 235 yards. For context, at my longest I can fly a drive somewhere in the range of 240–245 yards, which means in typical conditions I max out around 270 yards with roll. In 2010, I played a round in late spring at Red Tail Golf Club in Devens, Massachusetts. I played from the Silver tees, with the course playing about 6,700 yards.
As I’m about to give up and declare a lost ball, we drive to another ridge in the fairway and I see a ball another 40 yards ahead. We drive up to it and it is indeed my ball. It’s about 120 yards ahead of where the other players were hitting! I check my yardage and I have 181 yards to the middle of the green. So, the drive travelled about 380 yards, with probably 120 yards of the distance occurring on the ground down the firm, downhill fairway. Crazy. To me, hitting off the rubber tee doesn’t change ball flight so that I notice but it definitely changes the feel of the swing. Those rubber stands have a lot more mass than a tee. They will grip the club more than a tee because the rubber is much more sticky than wood or hard plastic. They are also connected to the mat which isn’t moving so as a club pushes it forward, it is being pulled back. A normal tee in turf presents almost no resistance to a swinging club head. This means that hitting off the rubber feels much heavier through impact – you can feel the pull of the rubber slowing down the club head. It doesn’t feel like a normal swing, which makes it bad practice. Hurt it? No. However, it can give a golfer false feedback in that you cannot take a divot on a mat. So your club might be bottoming out at or just before the ball and you still make good contact on a mat. But if you did that on grass you would take a pretty big divot and hit it fat. When you make a good swing, the club contacts the ball THEN the turf.
