The 18th hole is a downhill par 5 listed on the card at 572 yards. If memory serves, it was playing about 560 yards on that day. In any event, conditions that day were perfect for a long drive — hot and humid weather, a downhill hole playing downwind, and firm course conditions. I ripped a drive down the right half of the fairway. We saw it bounce hard once and then disappear over a small ridge. I was consistently hitting my tee shots about 15–20 yards longer than my playing partners that day, so as they got up to their balls I was scanning the fairway ahead of them, searching for my ball. This means that hitting off the rubber feels much heavier through impact – you can feel the pull of the rubber slowing down the club head. It doesn’t feel like a normal swing, which makes it bad practice. Hurt it? No. However, it can give a golfer false feedback in that you cannot take a divot on a mat. So your club might be bottoming out at or just before the ball and you still make good contact on a mat. But if you did that on grass you would take a pretty big divot and hit it fat. When you make a good swing, the club contacts the ball THEN the turf.
