Let’s admit it: We’re living in scary times, what with COVID-19 cases skyrocketing across the country and the short-term future of school, work, and American life in general once again thrown into disarray by the pandemic. It can sometimes feel like there’s nothing to be done, but that’s not true—even if you’re vaccinated and boosted, masking while indoors can still do plenty to protect you and your community. For most of us, that means a mask upgrade is in order. Of course, many people never stopped heavy-duty masking, and they should be commended for that. I’ll admit it, though: During the period of relative COVID-19 normalcy between delta and omicron, I stopped wearing my heavy-duty KN95s as regularly, opting instead for disposable, bulk-purchased masks that aren’t quite up to weathering the current COVID-19 surge.

Makes me feel complete. Quite a lot of the time I wear a color that goes with most of what I wear. But in general, it’s not about having colors on your nails, it’s nice to have neat nails not just for the aesthetic but also the general health of your hands. Your hands are used so much in life, so you have to protect them like jewels! These days, no red carpet is complete without at least one chic gray hairstyle to get the flashbulbs popping. Kristin Scott Thomas did the honors at the Fashion Awards 2021, arriving at the Royal Albert Hall on November 29 with her hair in an elegant pale blonde bob, swept into a side part to emphasize the silver streaks at her hairline. The simple style was the perfect finishing touch for the actor’s understated black satin gown, along with a bejewelled silver clutch bag that complemented her sparkling drop earrings. Scott Thomas made her name playing upper-class brunettes in the late ’90s (who could forget Fiona in Four Weddings and a Funeral?), and more recently made quite the impression on Phoebe Waller-Bridge as businesswoman Belinda in season two of Fleabag. Now, the British star looks every bit as good having swapped her signature chocolate brown for a sleek silver-blonde bob. Scott Thomas’s red-carpet cameo came at the end of a year in which grey hair has dominated beauty headlines. Andie MacDowell’s cascading curls were the talk of Cannes Film Festival in July, Sarah Jessica Parker showed off her regrowth on the set of the Sex and the City reboot, and Spain’s Queen Letizia has been representing the grey movement in royal circles.

I think that if you have a color in mind but want to be slightly different, it’s not a bad idea to go slightly darker on the toes but at least in the same color. I do, however, think that a French mani on your hands paired with a Big Apple Red or Rouge Noir on the feet is cute. Over the summer, I’ve seen a lot of people having matching French on hands and feet which also looks chic. For myself, I kind of go from extreme nails to simple chic nails, and also on myself—when it comes to nail art—I’ll never revisit a nail design again. It’s almost like once it’s done, it’s done. It helps that trends also change like every 30 seconds. When it comes to nail art, I think it’s also dependent on the length and shape of the nail as to what you can go with. Trends that I have loved over the last year have ranged from the negative space swirl on almond shaped nails and a chic micro French on a short natural nail to animal prints such as tortoise and reptile. In America, Nails By Mei. She is someone that I am always watching simply because her nail art is really bespoke. Kim Truong is another girl I’m in awe of. Every time I see new work, my bottom lip just drops and I’m just like, Oh my gosh, this is really, really cool. From the U.K., one of my old colleagues, the lovely Sadie J., she’s another brilliant artist who does a lot of cartoon work. I would say probably those are my top three.
