At the moment, Atim is developing a screenplay inspired by her Ugandan background, in between running an informal salon for British creatives and writing more of her own music, which fuses jazz, hip-hop, and classical influences. She’s confident that all of these disparate threads will end up weaving themselves together at some point. “Sometimes you have to go around a corner a little bit to come back and go, ‘Oh, okay, I know where I am now.’ ” She pauses, then breaks into a grin: “A little bit like me getting here this morning.” It might seem as though the current water shortage plaguing Jackson, Mississippi, came out of nowhere, but in fact the city has been dealing with the effects of an aging water system for decades. The Woman King, however, presented a fresh challenge, with Prince-Bythewood shooting the historical epic in just two months. “I started from zero,” Atim recalls of her boot-camp-style training, which included mastering spear-throwing and learning a battle dance that “nearly killed me.” Filming conditions in South Africa proved tough, too; like true Dahomey warriors, the cast members were slicked with oil (“I would get home covered in red dust”) and navigated the rocky terrain barefoot. “It’s an intense situation, and you’re trying to give the material the reverence that it deserves,” she says. “The stakes are definitely high.” At home, Atim’s day-to-day is decidedly more low-key. She’s developed an obsession with DIY projects since moving into her London apartment (“I’ve told every man and their dog about it…I even went to an event with paint still on my arms”), and she likes to spend her spare evenings going to jam sessions by herself. “Live music is a big replenisher for me,” she says. “I love being on my own, doing things on my own, going places on my own—that’s me, that’s my life, and I like it.”
The immediate cause of the current water shortage are the floods that began to overwhelm the Pearl River last week.
