While the cases of Iran and Equatorial Guinea were mostly unknown in the West (except anti-Shah student protests), the 1980 coup in Bolivia and its leader, General Luis Garcia Meza, were supported by local (the Socialist Falange) and foreign neo-fascists. Some of them even became advisors and mercenaries in Garcia Meza’s regime. His rule, though intended to last twenty years, ended after more or less a year. Despite its very repressive nature, it was mostly a common military dictatorship and didn’t have a single party, so it wasn’t really fascist, though its use of fascistic symbols was internationally notorious.
The history of fascism mostly ended by mid-1980s. No regime that appeared after that time had full fascist characteristics, though some were thought to be similar. Saddam Hussein was called by many, among them the known historian Stanley G. Payne, a sort of modern-day equivalent of Hitler or generally of fascism. His regime did have fascist characteristics like a dominant-party state (unlike in complete fascist states, some other organizations were permitted), moderate “socialism”, nationalism, militarism, etc. However, his regime, and thus also the similar government of modern Syria, had some differences[9]from older such states, which preclude them from being considered fascist.
A short resurgence of fascism took place in the 1970s. Neo-fascist terrorism and other activity rose in Italy, Spain and France, while in 1975 the Shah of Iran declared a one-party state led by the fascist Rastakhiz party. However, a particularly strange case of fascism was seen in Equatorial Guinea under Francisco Macías Nguema between 1968 and 1979. This statesman was searching for a new ideology for his country, newly independent from Spain, so he turned to Falangism and Francoism as sources of inspiration. His militias wore blue shirts based on those of the Falange and a number of other Francoist symbols were used, along with an increasingly nationalist and anti-Western ideology. However, since 1973, some elements were also taken from North Korea, among them to the name of the ruling National United Party was added a reference to the workers. Macías Nguema went as far as publicly praising Hitler and Franco, whom he highly respected and outlived for four years. He ended up executed by his nephew, who became a less ideological dictator and is still ruling today.
