You’re busy speaking the truth, being authentic and genuine meanwhile they have a whole different conversation going on in their head. They are masters at being indirect so you really don’t know what you are answering because the question is never the question, the statement is never the statement, the meaning is never the meaning. While you speak the truth they are finding every way to use that against you, to devalue you, to discard you, or anywhere else the information may be useful for them. You will find this to be true later on in hindsight and scratch your head wondering how you didn’t see it during the conversation, that they were getting at something else entirely and using your involvement in the conversation as a distraction while they play a game.

A narcissistic personality disordered person OR someone with enough narcissistic traits to be emotionally and mentally damaging, is never having the conversation you think you are having with them. This has blind sided me so many times because my mind is so opposite that of a narc, I assume we are talking about the topic we are talking about. They aren’t though. They are asking questions in a strategic way, (one thing you will find is that a narc doesn’t ask questions out of curiosity or conversation) there is a reason or there is a twisted motive behind it.

They just get mad full stop and its all about choosing when to exert control. The example about becoming mad after doing what they do is just a smokescreen. What it really is, is a convenient excuse to put you back in your box as they thought you were getting a bit too big for your boots. Time to slap you back down. Just like a school bully there is an underlying need to be top dog which is where the control comes in. The irony is the bravado and anger mask deep insecurities and lack of self belief. The only way to keep these at bay is to choose a partner who will never represent a challenge and can be kept at a safe arms length when it comes to innermost feelings.
