“Yet we esteemed Him smitten by God and afflicted.” This describes how the Jewish people felt when they mockingly yelled up at the crucified Jesus “He trusts in God, does He? Then let God deliver Him now if He desires Him” (Matthew 27:43). “He was pierced for our transgressions.” Most people know that a crucifixion involves the piercing of wrists and feet. In Jesus’ case, His side was also pierced to ensure that He was dead. An interesting side note here: when the Romans wanted to make sure their crucifixion victims were dead, they usually broke their legs so they could no longer lift themselves up to breathe. However, just like the Passover lamb, THE lamb of God—Jesus—did not have a bone broken either.
Notice that the word “we” is used in the last portion of verse 3. Isaiah, a Jew, is describing Israel’s rejection of Jesus. Now imagine that you are God and you incarnate into your creation and among your own people to bring them their hope of salvation, but they reject you. Of course you would be “well acquainted with sorrows and grief.” Many people, both Jew and Gentile, know that Jesus came into the world to pay the price for sin that warrants mankind’s eternal separation from our morally perfect and holy Creator. In paying that price, Jesus bore our sin and took the punishment for it upon Himself so that God’s justice could be satisfied and a way for us could be made to Him. “Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.”
The language in verse 6 describes how all humans have strayed from God. Israel is no different. Their M.O. throughout the Old Testament was to stray from God and turn to idols. This is, in fact, a depiction of all of mankind. Old Testament scripture says we all sin and are all “brought forth in iniquity”. Psalm 51 and many others confirm this. Verse 6 describes mankind’s iniquity and how Jesus bore the punishment for all of it: “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.”
